Amélie Hikes the East Coast Trail – DAY 41

CALVERT WHARF TO LANCE COVE

It’s been raining and drizzling all morning, but since it’s so nice and warm out – about 20 degrees – we decided it was too nice an opportunity to miss.

Getting out of the car, we zipped the girls into their rain suits (with better base layers this time), and started our hike. Amélie’s progress was fantastic on the community link, but very slow on the trail, since the rain had made everything slippery. We played hide-and-seek for a good bit of the trail, which made the time pass quickly.

Just after we got home, we got a call from Justine, the thru-hiker we’d met in Renews last week. She wanted to know if she could still take us up on our offer of a hot shower and a warm bed. Having left from Cappahayden six days ago, Justine has already hiked all the way to Mobile – averaging 16 to 19 kilometres a day. With a 50-pound pack, that’s a punishingly fast pace. We were excited to have her stay with us, since Amélie would get to spend time with a fellow thru-hiker.

We pitched Justine’s tent in the living room to let it dry, and talked about her hike so far. Amélie was very curious about the fact that Justine was sleeping on the trail.
